Mangone and I
9/2/10
I love photography lining up the shot and clicking the button and seeing the flash of the camera, but Mangone loves art, classic museum art the kind in an old dusty frame that reeks with the smell of mothballs. I hate museums Mangone only likes painted art she uses every ounce of her being to drag me into a stale old museum but all I do is impede her quest. I hate painting getting it under your nails on your clothes being messy. Mangone despises when I pick up the shiny black lenses and hears a click and the lingering light in your eyes from the flash of a camera. We love to hate each other’s passion.
I am a part of Mangone I do not know how this works am I the thoughts am I the brain or am I Mangone or the person observing we are a part of each other and will always be. Together in life and apart in passion and so this ends and begins again.
I do not know which one of us has written this page.
"We love to hate each other's passion." I think it's interesting how each character takes such pleasure in the hatred of what the other person loves. Often we experience this feeling but don't vocalize it.
ReplyDelete"but Mangone loves art, classic museum art the kind in an old dusty frame that reeks with the smell of mothballs". I love the description you love throughout the whole piece. Really good work.
ReplyDelete"We love to hate each other's passion" really creates the connection between the different state of minds before having to question yourself. daps
ReplyDeleteshe uses every ounce of her being to drag me into a stale old museum but all I do is impede her quest.
ReplyDeleteI like this because it shows that Mangone and the author both influence each other and try to persuade the other to agree with them.
"I am a part of Mangone I do not know how this works am I the thoughts am I the brain or am I Mangone or the person observing we are a part of each other and will always be."
ReplyDeleteI like how you leave the fact you have this "alter ego" unjustified. You just accept her despite question her existence at the end of the day.
"we are a part of each other and will always be. Together in life and apart in passion and so this ends and begins again."
ReplyDeleteThis excerpt really captured a part of my interest. It almost feels like a summary of your relationship. The common ground that brought you trying writing this.
"we love to hate each other's passion"
ReplyDeletebeing able to finish the paragraph with a phrase that maintains that conflicting idea, love to hate, is awsome! totally illmatic
Annie--
ReplyDeleteBeautifully written. Here is my favorite part of the piece, although I have many favorite parts but this part really grabbed me,
We love to hate each other’s passion.
I am a part of Mangone I do not know how this works am I the thoughts am I the brain or am I Mangone
The notion of contradiction really comes through in "I do not know how this works..." Beautiful. You capture the spirit of the human condition deftly, with precision and grace. Bam.
When you write, you connect both you, and yourself in first person and third person: "Mangone despises when I pick up the shiny black lenses and hears a click and the lingering light in your eyes from the flash of a camera". When you say Mangone despises when I... I can feel you weaving in and out of yourself. Kinda cool...just saying
ReplyDeleteI hate painting getting it under your nails on your clothes being messy
ReplyDeletePainting like life, you never stay clean
I like that the character contradictions are presented in a way that doesn't suggest that the narrator is indecisive or confused, but rather they are at terms about having two wildly different, conflicting sides of them. Very clearly written too.
